Jadavpur University's doctorate thesis case, which, according to the university, revealed "plagiarism in its worst form " came up for hearing before Mr Justice Sanjib Banerjee of Calcutta High Court today. Appearing for Mr Subhamoy Singha Roy, one of the two candidates for the university's Ph.D degree in science, Mr Arunava Ghosh submitted that the university had violated natural justice by punishing the candidates for alleged plagiarism before holding a proper inquiry.

Counsel of Mr Samit Pahari, the second candidate for the Ph.D supported the writ petition of Mr Singha Roy and submitted that injustice had been meted out to his client. The matter will come up for hearing on Tuesday.

Temple investigation Mr Girish Gupta of Calcutta High Court today directed the District Judge, Alipore, South 24-Parganas to investigate the allegation of contempt of court made by a sebait, Mr Asoke Halder against the Kalighat Kali Temple Committee. In a writ petition Mr Halder had complained that the temple committee had not acted according to the scheme prepared by the Supreme Court. On this petition Mr Gupta had passed an order on 28 July, 2005 directing the Temple Committee to ensure that the `pala' (turn) to offer puja to the Goddess was not transferred to any outsider.
