In view of the expected shortage of approximately ten lakh accountants in the junior level in the next 10 years, Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI) has launched a certificate course in Accounting Technician (CAT) today.

The course has been designed especially to cater to the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME), retail sector, KPO and BPO Sectors and panchayats, following a recommendation by the Union ministry of corporate affairs. The course is aimed at developing accounting skills of students belonging to the rural areas, who cannot afford an expensive professional course.

The course will be of a year-long duration, which includes a 15 day management orientation programme and computer training. Divided into two phases, the course will have four papers at the entry level and two papers along with the training at the competency level. Moreover in an effort to encourage students from rural sectors to enrol for the course, the course will be offered in both English and Hindi medium.

Unlike other professional courses, a student must complete the 10+2 level to be eligible for admission into the entry level of the course. Expecting an approximate enrolment of 30,000 students in its first year, Mr Chandra Wadhwa, president of ICWAI said, " The examinations will be conducted in June and December so that the dates do not clash with any other university examinations. We are looking forward to hold the first entry level examination in December this year. The successful students of this course are expected to be recruited by the target organisations with salaries ranging from 10,000-15,000 per month". The course will be run at all the four regional offices and 102 chapters of the institute.
