RG Kar Launches Special Courses In Medical College And Hospital In Kolkata

Medical education in the city took a step ahead with the introduction of superspeciality courses at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last week.

It has received approval to launch courses on cardiology and cardio-thoracic surgery along with two other MD courses. Six more disciplines could be given the nod very soon. SSKM Hospital is the only other medical college in Kolkata that offers superspecialisation.

"We have received a letter of permission for the two courses. The Medical Council of India and the West Bengal Health University carried out a joint inspection some time back. We had kept our fingers crossed but the approval has finally come through," said Gautam Mukherjee, a senior doctor at NRS. While the cardiology and cardio-thoracic courses will have just one opening each to begin with, the MD courses on anaesthesia and microbiology will have five and three seats, respectively. The college is also set to launch a nursing college.

NRS has also applied for permission to start MD courses on ophthalmology and dermatology. "This is good news for medical students in the city.

Competition is intense for postgraduate and superspecialisation courses. The more seats we have, the better for students," said P K Nemani, secretary of the Indian Medical Association.

Postgraduate courses on forensic, psychiatry and physiology are also slated to be introduced. "There has been an inspection for these courses and the indications are positive. Let us hope we will be able to introduce the courses soon," added Mukherjee.

The medical community has hailed the development. Senior doctors said this could ultimately pave the way for private medical colleges in the state.

Classes for the new courses will commence this month. Candidates with MD or MS degree will be eligible to apply for the superspeciality courses.
