Pipe-Laying Work Eats Into Traffic Space In KolkataBy siddharth22, Section Civic Problems in Kolkata
Behala has turned into a motorist's nightmare, thanks to a sewerage line-laying work undertaken by the Kolkata Environment Improvement Project (KEIP) three years ago.
A pipe with a six-metre diameter is being laid Taratala onwards along James Long Sarani, which served as a breather for Behala traffic in the face of a perennially clogged Diamond Harbour Road. "The work started on April 5, 2005. Three years on, there's no sign yet of the work being completed," rued Behala deputy superintendent of police (traffic), Pritish Nandi. Even Ram Mohan Roy Road and Ho Chi Minh Sarani, which could have shared the excess traffic on DH Road, have been partially blocked due to the project. "With the arterial roads in a bad shape, most motorists prefer to take DH Road. Had the authorities met the deadline for completing the work within a year and a half, there would have been no such problem," added Nandi. There are three preferred routes from Thakurpukur and Joka. First is MG Road, which takes one from Thakurpukur to the Tollygunge Metro station, but it is one of the busiest roads. Another is James Long Sarani that connects Joka with Taratala. But the major volume of the traffic plies along DH Road, which connects Joka to the city. Auto-rickshaws add to the road chaos with their unruly ways. Earlier, autos plying from Sarsuna to Chowrasta and Sarsuna to Taratala used to take James Long Sarani. But now, they also take DH Road. Around 4,000 autos ply on the road every day. Unofficially, the figure is much higher.
The plight of Behala residents is clear from the experience of Saumyadipta Lahiri, an MBA student. Recently, he was on his way to the airport, for which he left two hours ahead of his Mumbai-bound flight, expecting that he would reach in an hour. "But I was wrong. Out on the road, it was absolute madness. I tried to take James Long Sarani, which was choked. Starting at 4 pm, I finally reached the airport at 7.45 p.m. and my flight was about to depart in 15 minutes.
I realised that even two hours are not sufficient now to reach the airport from Behala, which is merely 20 km away," he said. Source:The Times Of India,31-03-08
