Jadavpur University (JU) Restricts Police Entry Into Campus In Kolkata

While a verbal altercation between students was enough to invite deployment of police within the Bengal Engineering and Science University (Besu) campus, police remained a mere spectator to the vandalism at Jadavpur University after the  authorities restricted their entry in the campus.

The report of the then additional chief secretary and now the home secretary Mr Asok Mohan Chakrabarti, to probe into the destruction of property at the Science Club and office of Karmachari Sansad, JU on the night of 5 April 2007, clearly stated that JU authorities denied police entry despite the utter lawlessness within the campus. Police could have controlled the situation much earlier and hence saved the university from incurring such a huge loss and destruction of property, the report said.

On the fateful night, a huge contingent of police was posted outside gate no. 4 of JU. The report read that a group of students entered the campus by climbing the gate and since JU authorities restricted police entry, the unruliness could not be controlled. Even after the situation turned worse with the science club in flames, the JU authorities did not feel the necessity of seeking police protection.

However, the report stated "the police contingent stationed outside the campus could see flames and smoke inside the campus".

While JU authorities depicted apathy in allowing police intervention, Besu authorities on the other hand, is being criticised for its dependence on police posting.

In the recent incident of student unrest at Besu, police and rapid action force were summoned although it was only a verbal altercation between two groups of students.

Police remained inside the campus for over a week after the incident even during the semester examinations. According to experts, Besu authorities depended on police after every incident of student unrest in the past.

According to academicians, the over-dependence on police can be considered as failure of Besu authorities to handle any untoward incident while it is sheer callousness of JU authorities to disallow police and let lawless situation to prevail. The one-man commission has, in fact, warned JU authorities: "obsession with avoidance of police action against miscreants within campus would encourage other groups of antisocials to cause violence and destruction of properties in future. People will know that no matter how serious are the crimes, police will never apprehend the criminals inside the campus".
