Jamiat Renews Threat To West Bengal Governmen Bengal Over SEZs On Farm Land In The StateBy Shashank, Section News
The Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind (JUIH) on Thursday renewed its threat to the West Bengal Government to oppose any move to set up Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on agricultural land in the State.
Siddiqulla Chowdhury, president of West Bengal's JUIH unit and the man who mobilised the minorities against land acquisition in Nandigram, on Thursday, said any Government move to take over agricultural land would be resisted. He said like we opposed takeover of Nandigram, we will oppose any other move to create any SEZ by the State Government. He said in the upcoming panchayat election, the State unit of the JUIH will form a Democratic Front to fight the CPI(M)-led Left Front. Not amused by the State and the Central Government move to throw out controversial Bangaladesh writer Taslima Nasreen, Chowdhury said it would not soften their opposition to land grab in the name of setting up SEZ. "These are two separate issues and the Government can not hope to win us by expelling Taslima from the State," he said. The JIUH said it would await Deoband rector Maulana Makghoobur Rahman's decision on election of a new president and appealed to States and district units to remain calm in face of this crisis. The JUIH ran into an organisational crisis after Maulana K Mohammad Osman and Maulana Mohammad Madani resigned from the post of president and vice-president.
