Locations of new institutions of higher education, as proposed in the 11th plan, have been finalised.
These include eight Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and 14 Central universities, which would achieve world-class standards.
The cities which have been selected for locating 14 Central universities with "world class" standards include Pune (Maharashtra), Kolkata (West Bengal), Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Mysore (Karnataka) and others.
At a Press conference, minister of human resource development (HRD), Mr Arjun Singh, said all proposed institutions would be functional by the end of the 11th five-year plan.
While four IITs will be set up at Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Gujarat and Punjab, locations of the remaining four have already been announced by the HRD ministry in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh. In addition to this, the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, would be converted into an IIT. Of the seven new IIMs, one each would be set up in Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Haryana and at Raipur in Chattisgarh. An IIM for the North East in Shillong has already been announced.
