The state finance minister Mr Asim Dasgupta today urged authorities of private medical colleges to take initiatives to teach students more on critical trauma care, neurology, cardiology and cardiovascular to fill up vacancies of specialist doctors in the state.
He urged the students to go to the rural areas and serve economically challenged and distressed people. Mr Dasgupta today laid the foundation stone of Gurunanak Institute of Medical Science and Research (GNIMSR) at Mahispota near Sodhpur HB Town in North 24-Parganas.
Mr Dasgupta said there are 298 state government hospitals in West Bengal, where 42,000 beds are available. But the work load in these hospitals is very high. He urged owners of private medical colleges to ensure that patients coming from economically challenged families receive proper treatment at their institution. He also requested them to keep the cost of treatment within the means of common people. He regretted that though there are 1,700 private hospitals in the state where 27,000 people get treatment, the cost of treatment is so high that many of them are later admitted in government hospitals.
JIS Group Education initiative through its charitable trust proposed developing an integrated medical educational complex known as the Gurunanak Institute of Medical Science and Research in North 24-Parganas.
