No diesel Without A Pollution Under Control Certificate From June 5 To Check Pollution In The City

The state government is going to ban the sale of diesel to vehicles without a Pollution Under Control certificate from June 5 to check pollution in the city. Hence, owners of vehicles run on diesel must obtain those certificates by then.

This was decided at a meeting at Writers' Buildings on Wednesday, chaired by state transport minister Subhas Chakraborty and attended by environment minister Sailen Sarkar.

Chakraborty said the government is going to ban autos with stroke engines as these cause pollution. Now, the transport department will only allow autos with fourstroke engines to ply on LPG or diesel. Chakraborty said though many autos have permission for LPG, they are running on petrol, which the transport department will stop immediately.

The minister said they are also planning to increase the number of auto emission checking centres so that vehicles can easily obtain PUC certificates. He added that the state government will soon move the Supreme Court, seeking that all commercial vehicles, registered before 1991, be phased out.

The representatives of taxi associations present at the meeting, however, said it is not easy to obtain PUC certificates as there are only 70 auto emission centres in the city.

"We have proposed to the taxi associations to set up an auto emission centre of their own," said M L Meena, state environment secretary. He added that their centre can also act as a referral centre and thus they can generate revenue.

Meena said diesel-run cars will soon need to have the PUC stickers on their windscreens so that the staff at pumps can check the validity of the certificate before selling diesel. Police will be keeping tabs on pumps and ensure that they don't sell diesel to cars without a valid PUC certificate, said Meena.
