Owners Want Relaxed Norms For Marriage Houses In Kolkata

A Team of 50 members, representing the owners of 1,000 marriage houses located in the city, met Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya today, demanding relaxation of certain civic body norms related to the renewal of licenses of the ceremonial houses.

As per the norms laid down by the Calcutta High Court last year, several parameters were set for renewal of licenses of the marriage halls located in the KMC area. Presence of a car-parking place was a must in the vicinity of a marriage hall.

According to the HC guidelines, no ceremonial house can exist in close proximity to educational institutions like schools and colleges. But the delegation team finds it a hard to follow all the regulations set forth by the court.

"The tax rate determined by the civic body is too high and needs to be relaxed," said Amol Dhar, a member of the delegation team. "Apart from the high tax rates, KMC needs to relax other criteria set aside for renewal of the licenses of the ceremonial houses. We appealed to the mayor to look into the matter," he added.

"The court should decide the matter. Kolkata Municipal Corporation can do nothing in this regard. The norms have been laid down by the Calcutta High Court and if anybody has any grievance regarding the matter they can approach the court," said the mayor. If the ceremonial houses fail to abide by the HC norms, renewal of trade license will be stopped after March 31.
