Bridge Deadline Extended, Concretization Yet To Begin, Baghajatin Bridge May Open In A MonthBy siddharth22, Section News
For commuters bearing the brunt of the traffic snarls at the Baghajatin railway crossing, there is unlikely to be any respite soon. The March 31 deadline to reopen the rail bridge there after repairs has been pushed back due to technical reasons. It will take at least another month before the bridge could be opened to vehicular traffic.
A visit to the flyover on Monday revealed that though the base on which the concretization work will be carried out, is ready, the concretization work itself hasn't been taken up. Officials of Ircon, the agency executing the repairs, said there was a problem with the plan for the work on the dismantled part of the flyover. Ircon's deputy general manager I N Chakraborty said they were waiting for the final design to be approved. "We are checking the design. We have to know the exact cause of the damage. This will allow us to take up repairs in such a way so that we can prevent a similar damage in the future. The railways have already approved the drawing and concretization work will start by next week. It would take another 28 days after concretization for the bridge to be fully ready. The bridge could open by the end of April," Chakraborty said. KMDA's director general (operations) Debdas Bhattacharya though pushed back the date by a week. He said the final drawing would be ready within a few days and the concretization work is slated to take place on April 7. "Hopefully, the bridge could be opened to vehicular traffic by the first week of May," he said. Earlier, there was a big controversy over who should repair the rail bridge after the two-foot crater developed right on the middle of the bridge. Initially, both the KMDA and the railways passed the buck to each other. While KMDA officials said it was the railways' responsibility to repair the damage, the latter, however, said the work should be taken up by the KMDA because they did not sign the agreement over who should maintain the bridge. KMDA then appointed a team of experts from Jadavpur University to conduct a survey and prepare a report. The officials placed the report to urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya, whose intervention ensured that Ircon, the agency appointed by the railways to construct that part of the bridge, will carry out the repair.
The authorities then decided to dismantle a part of the bridge after the KMDA found out that substandard materials were used to construct the bridge.
With the bridge closed, daily commuters have faced the brunt of the traffic snarls. "Though the EM Bypass beneath the flyover remains congested for the entire day, things get worse particularly during rush hour in the mornings and evenings. It takes nearly half an hour to cross this small stretch on EM Bypass," said a commuter. "The delay in repair is creating tremendous inconvenience for motorists. The authorities will have to be more strict to prevent such delays," said development employees' joint action committee secretary PB Nag. Once the repair is completed, KMDA has further plans to widen the two-lane flyover into a four-lane one in accordance with its decision to widen the EM Bypass into a 10-lane corridor.
