Central Board Of Secondary Education (CBSE) Fixes Age Limit For Primary, Prep Admission

Concerned over the rising tendency among schools to set separate age-limit criterion during admission, the Central Board of Secondary Education has finally found a solution. The Board has decided to fix the minimum age limit for admission into the pre-primary and primary level in the CBSE-affiliated schools.

The chairman clearly instructed the school authorities that students below the age of 4+ years must not be admitted in the pre-primary sections while 5+ years should be the ideal age for admission in the primary section, that is, Class 1.

In an effort to rule out the confusion among parents about the actual age-limit criterion, Mr Ashok Ganguly, chairman CBSE  today asked principals of city CBSE schools to follow a specific age-limit criterion while admitting students. Around 30 CBSE school principals attended the meeting with the chairman where he primarily pointed out certain major loopholes in the admission procedure and stressed on the implementation of necessary changes in the current syllabus.

Ms Malini Bhagat, principal of Mahadevi Birla Girls Higher Secondary School who was present at the meet said: "He made it very clear that the pre-primary level classes must not be carried out for more than one year. Since different schools set different age criterion for admission, the Board made certain mandatory rules to make schools follow a uniform criterion."

He also observed the necessity to test the students' oral skills as he felt there are several students who are fluent in orals but perform poorly in written tests.
