India's first semiconductor research and chip designing hub is being set up in public private partnership mode in Kolkata at an estimated investment of Rs 100 crore. Budget 2008-09
The foundation stone of the India Design Centre was laid here today by the West Bengal's Minister for Information Technology, Dr. Debesh Das.
To be set up over 1.7 acres of land at the Salt Lake Electronics Complex here, the "one-stop VLSI shop" will have 20 floors covering 250,000 sq ft. The India Design Centre will have facilities for semiconductor chip design, testing and prototype manufacturing and is expected to be ready by the end of 2009.
Das said the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur had prepared the concept note for the project.
