Lalu's Steel Coach Plan Brings Rs 200 Crore Investment To State

The KK Birla group firm Texmaco Ltd has decided to set up a Rs 200 crore greenfield unit in Bengal to manufacture stainless steel passenger coaches following railway minister Lalu Prasad's announcement that all coaches would be converted to stainless steel by 2010.

Texmaco president & CEO Ramesh Maheswari said the facility will be set up by Texmaco United Rail, which is a 50:50 joint venture between Texmaco and Australia's United Rail group. Texmaco will seek 100-200 acres from the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government for the project, he said.

"This year's railway budget is really good for wagon-makers, especially for Texmaco. We are ideally placed to reap the benefits of announcements like the replacement of all coaches by stainless steel ones. United Rail has expertise in such coaches," Maheshwari said.

Terming the latest railway budget as "well-crafted", he said the target of procuring 20,000 wagons in 2008-09 is 100% more than that of 2007-08. "The minister has given stress on high capacity and modern design wagons which is good for the industry," he said. The Texmaco CEO also welcomed the announcement on reducing freight charges on petroleum products and fly ash.

Commenting on the railway budget, Titagarh Wagons Ltd (TWL) MD Umesh Chowdhary said it has encouraged the PPP model, which in turn will ensure a continuity of the growth momentum. Incidentally, TWL has recently entered into a JV with FreightCar America for manufacturing modern wagons.

"The current railway budget has proven that progress and growth of the Indian Railways is a sustainable one and not a flash in the pan," Chowdhary said.

The upward revision of cargo movement target from 785 million tonne to 790 million tonne is also commendable, he added.

Jessop chairman Pawan Ruia said that with the economy expected to grow at an average of 9% and with a cash surplus of Rs 25,000 crore, Lalu Prasad has done a commendable job by present-ing an infrastructure-growth oriented budget. The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) too termed the budget as progressive. "The freight rate cut by 5% on petrol and diesel will help to curb inflation," an ICC statement said.

The president of Merchants' Chamber of Commerce Atul Churiwal and Bharat Chamber president P R Agarwala also complimented the railway minister for presenting an innovative budget.
