Road & Water For Railway Passengers Of South Dinajpurand By The Next Three MonthsBy Shashank, Section Development
Railway passengers of South Dinajpur have been assured of a metalled approach road to the Balurghat station and an electronic signalling system in Buniadpur by the next three months.
Babulal Kerketta, the divisional railway manager (DRM) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR)'s Katihar division, said the 1km-long potholed road to the station here would be repaired soon. "We have decided to take up the construction of the road. Also, the electronic signalling system at the Buniadpur station on the Eklakhi-Balurghat route will be completed within three months," the official, who was on a visit to Balurghat yesterday, told journalists. The NFR has also planned to arrange for drinking water on the platform in Balurghat -- passengers have to face the absence of drinking water regularly -- within a couple of weeks. "We have decided to extend the existing platform by another 100 metres and are contemplating plying more goods trains on the route," Kerketta said. Click On "Full Story" For More...
The DRM's visit, however, has not gone down well with the Eklakhi-Balurghat Rail Unnayan Committee and local MP Ranen Burman.
"Before visiting Balurghat, he should have informed us," the RSP MP said today. "It was necessary that we meet him and discuss a number of issues related to the railway service. We have been consistently demanding introduction of electronic signalling system but nothing has been done so far. The Howrah-Malda Town Passenger was extended to Balurghat about two years' ago, but till date the service has not commenced because of the absence of the signalling," Burman said. "The change in timing of the Gour Link Express and the Calcutta-Balurghat Tri-weekly Tebhaga Express could also not be regularised solely because of the signal problem." Pijush Kanti Deb, the secretary of the Unnayan Committee, also echoed the MP. "We had several meetings with the previous DRMs. But this time, the incumbent did not bother to meet us," he said.
