Kolkata Maidan Gets `Symbolic' Book FairBy siddharth22, Section Events
A section of the city's intellectuals yesterday inaugurated a symbolic book fair at the green acres Kolkata Maidan, pledging to bring the annual literary event back at the venue from where it had to make an exit last year following environmental concerns.
Ignoring yesterday's winter showers, the fair was inaugurated with its traditional flavour as Kolkata's literary patriarch Sunil Gangopadhyay sounded a gong and kick-started the event at the Maidan. "Kolkata's book Fair is a pride of this city. The buzzword of the pollution problem that is doing rounds is a mere exaggeration of the fact. The pollution caused due to the book fair is a temporary problem which can be solved by taking adequate measures," Gangopadhyay said. Along with a number of intellectuals, Kolkata mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, a vocal critic of the Calcutta High Court that cancelled the fair at the Park Circus ground this year, was also present. "We all want the book fair to be held at Kolkata Maidan. Though the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has nothing to do with organising the fair, but we want to bring it back at its old place since it's an international event and associated with Kolkata's unique image," Bhattacharya said. A symbolic book fair was also inaugurated in the Town Hall Tuesday night in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to salvage a semblance of prestige before the foreign delegates.
"We have requested all little magazine publishers, writers and editors to come to the Maidan and sell their books on the ground. Though there will be no structure of book stalls but I would request them to carry their own plastic and papers and sell their books," said poet Subodh Sarkar.
The high court's decision has given a body blow to the Publishers and Booksellers Guild. But residents and academic institutions around the Park Circus ground where the fair was planned heaved a sigh of relief. The book fair stood cancelled with the court on Monday ruling against the organisers' decision to hold it in the Park Circus ground, which is surrounded by schools, colleges, hospitals and residential quarters. A division bench comprising Chief Justice S S Nijjar and Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghosh, after hearing petitions filed by residents challenging the legality of holding the fair, ruled against the Guild.Indo-Asian News Service
