Tata Plans Schools, Hospital For SingurBy Mrs Gupta, Section News
Tata Motors is keen to set up schools and a hospital in Singur -- apart from its small car factory -- as part of its community development programme.
The company has already brought in four mobile medical units that have been offering services to the villagers for the past six months. This apart, Tata Motors is also taking up a scheme to provide clean drinking water for the people in the area. About 12 acres of government land behind Singur rural hospital is lying vacant. The local panchayat has offered the land to Tata Motors, saying that the company can set up something that benefits the local people. Officials of Tata Motors have already spoken to panchayat officials, expressing their keenness to develop three schools here: Beraberi Surjyanarayan Mahavidyalaya, Gopalnagar High School and DD Bharati Girls' High School at Kamarkundu. The infrastructure of the schools need to be revamped to cope with the rising number of students. A part of Beraberi Surjyanarayan Mahavidyalaya is already being used as a sewing training school for the last six months, for families of landlosers. In fact, Tata Motors, along with Singer, has organised this training.
Gopalnagar panchayat pradhan Kalyani Pal and Beraberi pradhan Provash Pal said on Sunday that rural development manager of Tata Motors, S R Suryavanshi, has already spoken to them about their plans. A Tata Motors official said: "We will work to improve the facilities at the schools here with focus on education." Singur panchayat samity sabhapati Ranjit Mondol said: "We have sent a development scheme to Tata Motors through the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation. Now we are waiting for their recommendations." Despite the fact that the automobile giant has deployed four medical vans to cater to the villagers here, the area needs more such mobile units, said an official. Dibakar Das, convener of the Land Collection Committee, said, "We have requested them to increase the number of vans or turn the Bajemelia health centre into a rural hospital". On Sunday, work of Tata Motors machine shop, paint shop and engine shop continued in full swing. Source: Times Of India, Dated, January-14-2008
