Kolkata Book Fair May Not Start On January 30, Guild Yet To Submit Detailed Site Plan

The Kolkata Book Fair may not start on January 30, thanks to the Publishers and Booksellers Guild's delay in installing fire-safety equipment on Park Circus Maidan.

The fire services department feels there is too little time to make the necessary fire-fighting arrangements. A senior fire official said the department was not happy with the guild's work on fire safety inside and outside the fair ground. "Our officials inspected the site along with the guild's representatives on Thursday afternoon. They were taken aback to learn that the guild has not thought of fool-proof fire prevention measures. We have strict norms for fair organisers. If they fail to meet them, we will not give the no-objection certificate," the official said.

Installation of fire-fighting equipment is more necessary on the Park Circus ground because unlike the Maidan, it does not have a pond or tank nearby to supply water if a fire breaks out.

"There is a natural source of water in the Maidan, which can be readily used to douse flames. At Park Circus Maidan, the only source of water would be KMC's water booster pumping stations. We have asked the guild to locate a number of hydrants that could be used as the source of unfiltered water. Besides, we have asked guild officials to widen all the entry and exit points so that fire engines have free access in the event of a fire," he added.

KMC officials, too, have expressed concern over the delay by the guild to make provisions for essential amenities. Senior KMC officials said the guild is yet to produce the detailed site plan of the fair. "We are in the dark about the guild's plans as the guild officials are yet to submit a detailed plan for our consideration. We don't know how many stalls will be accommodated at the fair and whether we have to pull down the walls in order to erect erect entry and exit gates. Since we have to take care of basic amenities like toilets, garbage disposal and drinking water, we need the detailed site plan. How can we arrange for these essential services otherwise?" a KMC official in charge of the fair ground said.

Mayor Bikash Bhattacharya said he had asked guild officials to produce the detailed site plan so that KMC could start the work. Guild general secretary Tridib Chattopadhyay, however, assured that necessary steps would be taken so that the fair commences according to schedule.
