The Publishers and Booksellers Guild has written to defence minister A K Antony, seeking permission to organise Kolkata Book Fair, 2008, at the Maidan. The fair is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 29.
Guild secretary Tridib Chattopadhyay met senior state government officials on Tuesday to convey the message that Maidan remains their favourite venue. "We have explained the matter to the chief minister," Chattopadhyay said. The guild authorities will meet chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee again on October 3 or 4 to hold discussions on the venue.
"We are not taking any chances and have already booked Rabindra Sarobar stadium, Milan Mela off the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and Park Circus maidan as alternative venues for the book fair," he said. Chattopadhyay added that US will be the theme country for 2008. "We are expecting a Nobel laureate from the US to inaugurate the fair 2008," he signed off.
