Green Light To New Industries

The state Cabinet on Tuesday passed a number of proposals for new industrial units and also approved of acquisition and direct purchase of land for those.

At the meeting, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee reiterated that Nayachar island was the government's preferred site for setting up the chemical hub. He told his Cabinet colleagues that the government would seek the Centre's approval for Nayachar, provided Geological Survey of India and the Union environment ministry gave the nod.

When PWD minister Kshiti Goswami asked the chief minister about the expert committee he had promised to set up before choosing Nayachar, Bhattacharjee told him to suggest some names.

The Cabinet then passed the acquisition of nearly 8,000 acres required for various projects. Of these, around 4,840 acres, needed for DLF's Dankuni township, could be bought directly from farmers. But the government would negotiate the price on behalf of the investors.

Urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya suggested that the farmers in Dankuni could get 20% more than the market price. Immediately, land and land reforms minister Abdur Rezzak Mollah said his department would not object to offering double
the market price if the government so wanted.

Among the other projects passed were the Rs 550 crore Domjur township project, a steel factory by Videocon's Kitchen Appliances, a captive power plant at Baraboni in Burdwan, a steel plant and a captive power plant by Shyam Steel in Kharagpur and Raghunathpur. WBPDCL will also set up a thermal power plant on 1,030 acres in Katwa, Burdwan.
