Minister Asks Centre Not To Renew Lease Of Eden To Cricket Association of Bengal(CAB)

West Bengal Sports Minister Subhas Chakraborty has asked the Centre not to renew the lease of Eden Gardens to the cc, saying the ground should be used for other sporting activity as well.

In a letter to Defence Minister A K Anthony, Chakraborty said around 65 days of cricket were played at the Eden in a year and contended that the facilities could be optimally utilised if other sports were also held at different times of a year.

While confirming that such a letter has been sent to Anthony, CAB President Prasun Mukherjee, however, claimed it was only the personal opinion of the minister and not that of the state government.

"After learning of the letter, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee asked the Chief Secretary to communicate to the Defence Ministry that Chakraborty's missive only reflected his personal view and not that of the government," Mukherjee said.

The plot of land housing Eden Gardens is owned by the Defence Ministry and CAB held the lease which expired earlier this year.

CAB has applied for a renewal of the lease for 15 years and the matter is pending with the Defence authorities.

Mukherjee claimed that the minister's argument that Eden Gardens should host sporting activity other than cricket also would jeopardise the ground's selection as the venue for the 2011 World Cup.

"As per ICC rules, World Cup matches can be held only on grounds used exclusively for cricket and we may not get big matches later also," he said.

Mukherjee said the minister's statement that the state Sports Ministry was kept in the dark by the CAB on the renewal of lease issue did not hold water.

"It is a matter solely between the CAB and the Defence Ministry and the state government does not come into the picture at all," Mukherjee said.

Chakraborty could not be contacted as he is currently overseas.
