EW Metro Runs Into Land HurdleBy Unregistered Visitors, Section Kolkata Metro
Land acquisition is not just a problem in the farmlands on Nandigram and Singur. It has cropped up a few metres from Writers' Buildings, in the state's ambitious East West Metro project.
The plan involves taking over 200 metres of land along BB Ganguly Street, where around 40 small furniture shops are located. Despite RITES drawing up a plan to rehabilitate all the shopowners in the multi-level Metro station, trouble is already brewing. "It does not seem that the shops and offices along this stretch can be easily shifted to the station complex. From preliminary discussions, we gather that not everyone likes the idea," said a senior official.
Transport minister Subhas Chakraborty has called a meeting with Congress leader Sudip Bandopadhyay and ward-47 councillor Bimal Singh, on Monday to sort out the issue. "Shopowners won't agree to shift because they can't sacrifice their steady business. The relocation site has to be financially viable for them. These details have not been made very clear," said Shahanshah Jehangir, who will develop a furniture park on behalf of the shopowners.
Though very little land needs to be acquired for the East West Metro's underground line between Howrah and Phoolbagan, some land has to be taken over for the stations. The current row is over Central station, which will be the connecting point for the E-W Metro and existing metro. The transport department is already looking for an alternative site to relocate the shops. One option is the area around Poddar Court and another is Rajarhat. "These alternative proposals will be placed at Monday's meeting," the official added. "We have decided to approach public representatives so that they can persuade shopowners. We don't want any glitches." Source:The Times Of India,10-09-07
