Now, Passport Facility at Calcutta UniversityBy Unregistered Visitors, Section News
For teachers, employees and students of Calcutta University (CU) and its affiliated colleges, acquiring a passport has never been easier. Now, all they need to do is visit the passport application centre on the College Street campus of CU.
CU had been holding talks with Regional Passport Office (RPO) and GPO to start a passport application centre on its College Street campus. At the beginning of this month, RPO informed CU that since designated post offices are already providing such services, GPO could help open a similar facility on a smaller scale on the CU campus. "We have provided GPO with an office and we are encouraged to see that a large number of teachers and students are availing of the opportunity. We have plans to open the facility on all our campuses on designated days of the week," Samir Bandopadhyay, CU registrar, said. The centre will submit the forms to RPO and, after a specified time, applicants can log on to the net and check the status of their application. Initially, the varsity authorities were a little apprehensive about starting the centre on its premises as applicants can apply for passports online. "However, after conducting a sample survey among the faculty, employees and students we found out that most of them are still uncomfortable with the idea of e-form and trusted the conventional method. They said they had put off applying for passports as they thought it was a cumbersome process," said Bandopadhyay.
