`Major Scope For Export Of Flowers Grown In The State'By Unregistered Visitors, Section News
There is tremendous scope of exporting flowers that are grown in the state, said scientist Swapan Dutta. Dutta was speaking on the occasion of the formal announcement of the launch of the Vikdas Green House, a new initiative of the Jagadhatri Swaroop Narayan Tushar Griha Private Limited.
This initiative - the first of its kind in the state - flowers such as Gerbera, which were so far imported from other cities like Pune, can now be grown in the state. The poly houses that have been set up near Arambagh, will engage in floriculture, tissue culture and post-harvest management. "Through the process of protoplasm fission, it will now be possible to clone plants and also produce new varieties by cross-breeding," said Datta. CEO of Vikdas Green House, Manab Kumar Sengupta, said that along with plants like Gerbera, seeds of vegetables like potato will also be available in the state.
He informed that till now, potato seeds have been brought from other states like Punjab. But with tissue cul ture, they will be available in the state, which will reduce the cost of potatoes.
The laboratory, which would be spread over eight acres in Hooghly district, has been built at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore. Gautam Chatterjee, Managing Director of Vikdas Green House, said that the quantity of Gerbera produced in Green House would not be enough for export to other countries initially. "There is a great demand for the flower in the Kolkata market and initially we will supply them. We will think of exporting only after increasing production," Chatterjee further said.
