As part of its "ticket at doorsteps" programme, the railways plans to set up automatic ticket vending machines at various places like banks, petrol stations and post offices besides other convenient spots.
It also plans to introduce electronic boards at ticket booking counters which will display the availability of seats and waiting list and RAC positions. Rail Bhavan sources said that over 5,000 ticket vending machines would be installed in parking lots, waiting halls, station concourses as well as in universities and shopping malls as part of its "ticket at doorsteps" programme for the benefit of passengers.
The railways, in collaboration with mobile service providers, is also planning to introduce a card system to facilitate e-ticketing.
However, there are some constraints in this regard like high agent charges. Besides, the system does not provide details regarding waitinglist tickets. "If a train has already left the station, there is no definite procedure for refund," a source said.
The railways is trying to work out a solution for the waiting-list problem with the help of several leading IT companies like Infosys, Wipro and IBM, the sources said.
