Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Board Gets a Clean Chit From MinisterBy sachiv1, Section News
A day after reports of an alleged goof-up in the medical entrance examination list poured in, higher education minister Sudarshan Roy Chowdhury gave the Joint Entrance Examination board a clean chit. "The list that has been published on the Net is correct as are the rank cards issued to students," he said. However, the minister skirted the issue of the existence of two merit lists with discrepancies saying that he did not want to discuss it.
The counselling procedure that follows the publication of the merit list is scheduled to begin from June 23. A writ petition will be filed in the Calcutta High Court on Saturday demanding an explanation for the anomalies. Alauddin Mandal, a counsel appearing for eight students, said, "We have adequate evidence. We will bring them out for people." A K Maity, who runs a coaching centre, is also instrumental in filing the petition. "The very existence of two lists makes it apparent that there has been some foul play. The publication of lists has been going on for long, but such an incident had never occurred. The discrepancies are present only till the 800 rank. Several names in the two lists don't tally. After the 800 rank no one actually gets through a medical college and interestingly, there's no anomaly the 800th rank onwards," said Maity. "A certain Vineet Kumar is ranked at 21 followed by Md Ebrahim Sardar on 22 in one list. The other list has the names of Lipi Sarkar and Tanima Roy inserted between the other names," said Mandal showing the lists to Newsline. He added that there are more than 50 such discrepancies in the lists. "Snehasis Sarkar, with enrollment number 724915 has been awarded with 437 rank in one list of the medical entrance examination. However, when a search hit is initiated with the same enrollment number in the JEE website, it draws a blank," said Maity. The executive council of Jadavpur University had recently expressed reservation about the doubling of math marks while making the merit list. While the exam was conducted on 100 marks, the result as published out of 200 doubling the original score. The university had also written to the higher education department demanding an independent board for the conduction of the Joint Entrance Examination. (Source - Indian Express, 16/06/07)
