4 KMC Maternity Homes To Be Privatised

Municipal maternity homes in the city are to be "privatised" through the public-private partnership model (PPP). Three bidders are already vying to take over two prominent maternity homes owned and run by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation KMC).
Sources in the Municipal Health Department told Newsline that three major groups have expressed their interest in taking over "the North Maternity Home, located on Nilmoni Mitra Street in ward 17 and the Champamoni Maternity Home located on Christopher Road in ward 58".

Senior municipal officials believe that through the PPP model it may be possible to retain and run maternity homes professionally. "Two maternity homes at Chetla and Behala have already shut down. A third in Park Circus was given away for maintenance to a non-governmental organisation. At present, the KMC runs four maternity homes," said a senior municipal official. These four maternity homes, however, do not have the adequate number of gynaecologists. "To run the maternity homes effectively, around 20 gynaecologists are required. However, seven posts are lying vacant and two are away from work for various reasons," said a senior official on condition of anonymity.

As a first step towards making the running of these maternity homes more professional, the KMC is filling vacant posts with contractual employees. The corporation is in the process of recruiting 10 general physicians and seven gynaecologists for the four maternity homes on a contractual basis. "Interviews were conducted on Monday. Around 150 candidates had turned up for the job," Chief Municipal Health Officer Dr D D Chatterjee told Newsline.

Dr Chatterjee confirmed that several proposals have been made for improving conditions in maternity homes and the Municipal Health Department is looking into the offers. "We will verify the proposals. The proposals will then be sent to the mayor-in-council for its consideration and consent," Dr Chatterjee said.
