KoPT Ranks 2nd Among All Major Ports for Third Year in a RowBy Sumit Kumar, Section News
The Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT), despite having its two dock systems in the silt-prone Hooghly river, still ranks second among all major Indian ports for the third consecutive year, handling 55.05 million tonne in 2006-07 against 53.143m tonne in 2005-06. The Visakhapatnam Port Trust has ranked first with 56.386 m tonne.
While the KoPT's cargo handling grew by around 3.59 per cent, its profit before tax grew by 57.73 per cent over the previous year's figure of Rs 270.65 crore. KoPT Chairman Dr Anup Chanda said the surge in profit was mainly due to increased efficiency in cargo handling and growth of diverse cargo, for which more ships called on the Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) and the Kolkata Dock System (KDC). The KoPT handled 3,222 ships in 2006-07 as against 3,125 ships in 2005-06, the highest number of ships handled amongst all the major Indian ports.
With increased efficiency, pre-berthing detention was down to 0.39 days against a ministry set target of 0.42 days. Turnaround time has been brought down to an average of 3.92 days against the ministry-set average target of 4.04 days for the KDC and HDC.
Productivity (measured in average ship-berth day output) improved by 12.4 per cent at the KDS and 0.14 per cent at the HDC compared with the productivity in 2005-06. Chanda said these factors helped KoPT handle 55 m tonne of cargo. Although, there are three other major ports -- Chennai, Mumbai and Kandla--¿ that handled over 50 m tonne, Vizag and Kolkata are the only two ports that have crossed 55 m tonne in 2006-07. KoPT aims at handling 60 m tonne in 2007-08 and its revenue is expected to exceed Rs 1,400 crore. Looking forward, KoPT has an ambitious investment programme of Rs 968.67 crore for the 11th Five Year Plan, of which, Rs 268.69 crore would go for modernising the KDC, Rs 278.93 crore for the HDC and Rs 412.05 crore would go into the long-pending river regulatory scheme. Of the Rs 968.67 crore plan outlay, Rs 551 crore would come as central budgetary support, Chanda said. (Source - Indian Express, 07/05/07)
