Patients once again were at the receiving end at the state's premier medical college and hospital with power-cuts lasting for more than two hours on Wednesday. The hospital reeled under severe power-cut for the second successive day.

"The power-cut started early in the morning just before the out-patient departments started functioning. Both indoor and outdoor facilities faced problems with the patients bearing the brunt of heat and humidity. However, ticket counters for outdoor department as well as admission slips which are computer-generated were stalled for hours," said professor Ashok Ghosh, vice-principal cum medical superintendent of the hospital.

The authorities also informed that a report regarding recurring power failures has been sent to the state health department headquarters in Swastha Bhavan requesting speedy action.

According to hospital sources, power-cuts started at around 8 am and continued till 10:30 am. Patients and their relatives at the various OPDs had to stand in a long queues in the gruelling heat. The ticket counter was also deactivated.

Meanwhile, patients in various wards, including cardiology, emergency, cardio-thoracic, neo-natology, orthopaedic and other departments, were also at the receiving end. A handful of scheduled operations had to be cancelled along with some diagnosis.

The doctors and medical attendants had to use candlelights and battery-operated torches in wards during routine morning check-ups.

The hospital has been reeling under a series of power-cuts for the past two months now. On Tuesday alone, hospital authorities to cancel 15 scheduled operations due to power cuts lasting more than two hours.
