State Plans To Stop Production Of Fire Crackers

Remember last year's Kali Puja and Diwali? With one firecracker going off after the other, it was like living in a veritable hell hole.

This time, the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government is being extra cautious. It has decided to clamp down on noisy firecrackers, six months before the festive season. Police and the environment department have decided that instead of seizing firecrackers, its production would have to be stopped completely.

Last year, the then environment minister, Mohanta Chatterjee, had faced severe criticism from his party, as allegation of noisy Diwali and Kali Puja poured in from all quarters. It was even speculated that Chatterjee's inability to check noise pollution had cost him his department.

Later, Sailen Sarkar took over as the environment minister. It is clear that he does not want to take chances. Already, a committee to check noise pollution has been formed, and at a meeting held on Monday, officials decided that only preventing production of noise-producing firecrackers would ensure a peaceful Diwali and Kali Puja.

"Even if there is a lot of time ahead, the manufacture of firecrackers begins around this time. Instead of seizing the products, it is much better to stop their production altogether. The action plan would be chalked out shortly and police in all districts instructed within a few weeks," a senior environment department official said on Tuesday.

The state environment department officials also told police that instead of taking action against vehicles using air horns, police ought to stop their sales.
