Chief Minister kicks Off Sports Complex ProjectBy sachiv1, Section News
Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee became emotional on Sunday when he visited Laha Colony in north Kolkata where he had spent the first 24 years of his life. Bhattcharjee went there to lay the foundation of a stadium -- Sukanta Krirangan and a children's park, Purnendu Shisu Angan at the Laha Colony ground.
An emotional Bhattacharjee said he started his political career from there. "I have an emotional bonding with the place. I still remember Sukanta Bhattacharjee when he was very ill. I did not know who he was at that time. I now regret that he did not live a few years more to enrich our lives," the chief minister said. Bhattacharjee said the need for a playground with sports facilities was felt for a long time. The stadium and the children's park would come up on 63-cottah owned by N K Joshi, a businessman. KMC had to negotiate with Joshi to get back the plot. The sports complex would have table tennis, multigym, kabaddi, netball, chess and other indoor sports facilities.
Bhattacharjee said the notion that south Kolkata gets preference over north when it come to development, is untrue.
"We are already working to execute the Vivekananda Road flyover, to develop Mayo Hospital and for overall development of north Kolkata." The chief minister said that out of 80 lakh people in north Kolkata, about 17 lakh belong to the poorer section of the society. "No development would be fruitful unless we take proper care to develop the lives of the poor," he said. MP Sudhangsu Seal said: "Work will soon start to develop the Mullickghat international flower market. We are also planning to set up a college exclusively for the Hindi-speaking students who stay near Rabindrabharati University." (Source - Times Of India, 28/05/07)
