State To Submit Traffic Plan To Centre TodayBy sachiv1, Section News
The state government is all set to receive Rs 650 crore from the Centre for executing five major traffic and transportation projects in the city. The government will submit a comprehensive traffic and transportation plan to the Centre on Monday.
Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) was engaged to prepare the plan. "We have prepared the plan and would submit it to the Centre on Monday. Later, we have to visit Delhi and make a presentation," said KMDA chief executive officer P R Baviskar. The five projects that are yet to receive financial approval are the Rs 350-crore flyover from Park Circus to Parama Island with an elevated rotary and two ramps, Vivekananda Road flyover from Howrah bridge to Girish Park, Dunlop traffic interchange, ramps from AJC Bose Road flyover and the EM Bypass extension. Earlier, the Centre had mandated that such a masterplan must be presented to it before sanctioning the money under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM) scheme for the projects. This was made clear to state urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya a few months ago. The Centre held back funds for projects under the NURM scheme and asked the state to present a traffic management masterplan outlining all the technical aspects of the projects. The projects are considered to be extremely important to resolve the traffic crisis in the city. Any delay in executing the projects will only result in further traffic chaos.
