Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Schools Finally Get Holiday CalendarBy sachiv1, Section Education
The holiday calendar has finally been forwarded to primary schools run by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) in the city after a delay of two months.
Each year the session for KMC-run schools begins in early April. According to KMC norms, the list containing details of holidays announced by the government is supposed to reach the schools as soon as the new session begins. But according to sources within the corporation, this year civic authorities failed to hand over the holiday list to schools in time. The list was forwarded to the schools not before May 21. When asked, Member, Mayor-in-Council (MMiC) of the Education Department of KMC Kalyani Mitra said, "We had certain internal problems and couldn't provide schools with the list of holidays in time. Although the list was sent late, we kept the schools informed about the holiday details." The KMC runs 239 primary schools in the city and according to teachers of various schools they faced a lot of difficulty in the absence of the holiday list. "We need the holiday calendar once the session begins, because we need to decide the routine according to the holidays," said a primary school teacher on condition of anonymity. He told Newsline that schools were ordered to maintain regular contact with the KMC headquarters for information related to holidays. "We had to either contact the department through telephones or personally visit the headquarters in order to get valid information," he added. Each year the session for KMC-run schools begins in early April.
