Two New Drainage Pumping Stations to Tackle WaterloggingBy sachiv1, Section News
The foundation of two new drainage pumping stations were laid last evening at Marcus Square (ward four) and Gokhale Road (ward eight).
Residents can heave a sigh of relief with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) fulfilling its promise of addressing the problem of waterlogging in wards four and eight by next year's monsoon. The cost of installing the pumping stations will be around Rs 5-8 crore for the Marcus Square station and Rs 3 crore for the Gokhale Road station. Funded by the Centre through its Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the pumping stations will help solve the problem of water-logging once they start functioning. According to civic officials, the pumping stations will pump out 15 cusecs of water each.
Yesterday's foundation-laying ceremony was attended by Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, Municipal Commissioner Alapan Bandyopadhyay, Deputy Mayor Kalyan Mukherjee, MMiC of the drainage and sewerage department of the KMC Farzana Chowdhury and councillors of wards four and eight.
According to the mayor, the construction of the pumping stations will be completed within the next nine months and this will reduce water-logging in these areas during the monsoon next year. "But if residents demand that the water-logging problem should be reduced this year itself, that might not be possible," said Bhattacharya. Areas that will benefit by these pumping stations include Kalabagan, Central Avenue, Madan Burman Street, Muktaram Babu Street and Ram Mohan Street. Chowdury said, "Water accumulation on the streets of Kolkata is an age-old problem. Thus, getting rid of it will also take some time, but we are trying to achieve this target within the next two years." After the installation of these two stations, the number of pumping stations in the city will go up to 22. (Source - Indian Express, 21/05/07)
