The state government is going to construct a two-tier underground parking plaza at Laldighi as part of the beautification of Dalhousie Square.
The government has earmarked four sites for parking government cars that are at present parked at the site. At present, on an average, 350 cars are parked at the site and this number rises to 400 during peak hours.
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is going to lay the foundation stone of the Rs 35 crore project on June 4. The project will be completed in two years.
According to officials, there will be provision for the parking of 600 cars in the new parking plaza. "The relocation of cars during the two years of construction posed a serious problem for the government. We have identified four places-the stretch in front of Writers' Buildings, where cars of ministers and principal secretaries will be parked, the stretch on Lions' Range behind Writers' Buildings, and the Southeast and the Southwest side of Laldighi. However, we think even these four sites will not be able to accommodate all the cars and we will have to look for more," K Sathiavasan, principal secretary, department of PWD, told Newsline, at the end of a meeting on Friday.
The meeting was presided over by Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Deb and was attended by, among others, Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray and Kolkata Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee.
