No decision on Park Circus market yet, For the proposed revamp of the market

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has yet again failed to decide the issue of handing over Park Circus market to Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Retail, which has emerged as the top bidder in a privatisation drive.

At today's meeting of the members of the Mayor-in-Council (MMIC), item no 13 on the agenda, relating to the Park Circus deal, was dropped following objections from the Forward Bloc and RSP members. "We will take decisions only after the Left Front decides on the issue," said Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee.

The Mayor is learnt to have discussed the issue with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who has asked him to go slow.

In the 141-seat KMC, the CPI(M) has 58 councillors in a Left Front total of 75. The Forward Bloc, however, has six and the RSP four. Without the support of these two parties, the Mayor cannot run the board.

Sources in the CPI(M) said the Mayor has also discussed the issue with the top brass at the Alimuddin Street headquarters of the party and pointed out that if the RSP and Bloc continue to oppose all developmental work, it will be very difficult for him to work.

Earlier in the day, before the MMIC meeting, the RSP and Bloc members had met the Mayor and asked him to put the Reliance deal on hold.

Reliance Retail Ltd and Reliance Engineering Associates Pvt Ltd had bagged the Park Circus revamp deal with a bid of about Rs 33 crore. The market is to be re-built on the 1.5 lakh square feet plot it occupies once the MMIC clears the deal. The Mayor said he will not use a provision of the KMC Act that empowers him to take unanimous decisions and get them ratified later.

"It needs an extraordinary situation to use the power, and I don't find any need for that now," he said.

"The debate was raised only after the tender was issued. We will walk the path of law only after the controversy is over," the Mayor said.
