Autorickshaws to Switch to LPG, Orders State GovtBy Sumit Kumar, Section Transportation
The state Environment Department has asked autorickshaw owners to immediately switch over to eco friendly fuels like LPG to curb vehicular pollution in the city. The department has already asked its transport counterpart to implement the "conversion", at least with regard to the autorickshaws plying the city's roads.
"We have also asked the Transport Department to subsidise the entire process of conversion to LPG from our own resources. We have a budgetary allocation of Rs two crore for this purpose with which we could facilitate the process," said state Environment Minister Sailen Sarkar, while addressing a media conference at the WBPCB. Though LPG costs around 40 per cent less than petrol, most autorickshaw drivers have been averse to the switch. The reason being that they use a highly polluting concoction of solvent and kerosene, which is a much cheaper alternative.
The Environment Department is also not satisfied with the Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates issued to vehicles. "We are not satisfied with the PUC mechanism. We want the system to be more intensive," said K L Meena, secretary, state Environment Department. In fact, authorities in the department want the Transport Department to enforce a "no PUC no petrol" norm in all fuel outlets.
The state Environment Department has also called for greater activism in the Nirmal Ganga programme. After reviewing the existing situation, it has urged the 44 municipalities and the Kolkata Port Trust to make efforts in controlling pollution in the Ganga. "The WBPCB, on its part, is monitoring the activities of 66 big industrial units that involve processes which could pollute the Ganga," said Biswajeet Mukherjee, senior law officer, state Environment Department. The WBPCB has also lined up a seminar on "Climate change-issues and challenges for India" to commemorate World Environment Day on June 5. (Source - Indian Express, 18/05/07)
