Come October and the 40,000 taxis of the city will ply inside the Yuva Bharati Stadium, undergoing meter calibration tests. The public-private partnership project, close to the heart of state's transport cum sports minister Subhas Chakraborty, has already felled a hundred trees on a three-acre plot in the stadium, meant for sporting purposes. The minister and his officials are upbeat over what is being touted as a "firstever sophisticated taxi meter calibration facility" with private partner Bhagwandas Group, which is being handed over the plot. Apart from the meter testing facility, the area will have a shelter for old state buses, adding to the pollution and chaos.
