In a dramatic series of events at Calcutta University, principals from seventeen colleges across Kolkata protested in front of the vice-Chancellor's office on Tuesday.

The protesting principals, who were mostly office bearers and working committee members of the West Bengal Council of College Principals, included council president Gyanankur Goswami, vice president M Sengupta of Maharani Kashiswari College, treasurer A Sengupta of Maharaja Siris Chandra College and the principals of Surendranath College, Bangabasi College, Maheshtala College, Bagnan College and others.

"We reached the vice-chancellor's office around 2.30 in the afternoon, but he didn't meet us," said Goswami. "We peacefully continued our protest till 5.30 pm. When the vice-chancellor informed us that only two members could meet him we turned down the request," he added. "The vice-chancellor is the moral guardian of the statute university and we are the observers of the statute, but it is the fourth time in the last few months that he has not met us," said Goswami.

The body of representatives went to see the vice-chancellor, asking his intervention in revoking the suspension of Kalachanda Saha, who is the secretary of the council and principal of Andul College, Howrah.

Members of the syndicate, the highest policy making body of the CU, met the principals and promised that the enquiry report will be placed at the next meeting.
