UK to Look Into Investment Opportunities In The StateBy sachiv1, Section Business
Investment possibilities in West Bengal will be looked into by the UK trade ministry. Dr Kim Howells, Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, who was in the city today, appreciated the agricultural potential of West Bengal and said that he will hold discussions with the UK trade minister on investment possibilities in the state after he returns to his country.
At the inauguration of the British Council's "Lifestyle and Diversity Zone", a centre for providing information on studying in the UK and other educational issues, Howells today said that West Bengal is India's most "fertile place" and has got great potential for agriculture. What is needed, however, is quality technology, the minister said. Howells added that in terms of UK investments abroad, India figures next only to the US and Japan. "I will discuss with the trade minister about his views about investment possibilities in Bengal." He also said that he will take up some other issues for discussion in his meeting with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee the same evening.
While trade and investments, along with development of the region are one aspect of the discussion, issues of regional security and climate change are the other key areas that will form parts of the bilateral talks. Adding that India has a tough neighbourhood, Howells, whose portfolio includes counter-proliferation, counter-terrorism and counter-narcotics, said that the moves made by the caretaker government of Bangladesh at curbing terrorism are "encouraging".
Responding to a question whether he sees India (and thus West Bengal) a soft target for terrorist organisations, Howells said that every place is a destination for terrorists "porous borders" and "safe access" being important facilitators. He further said that he sees Kolkata as the intellectual powerhouse of India and for South Asia and stressed the need for a sustained intellectual linkage between universities and research institutes of the city and the UK.
