Door to door Collection of Waste in 4 Wards From June 5By sachiv1, Section News
An initiative to collect non-biodegradable waste from door-to-door across four wards in Kolkata will be launched on June 5, the World Environment Day. The initiative is aimed at proper disposal and recycling of wastes like plastics at a recycling plant to come up on Christopher Road, Park Circus. The plant will be inaugurated on the same day. It will involve 250 members from self-help groups who will earn their living and in the process will keep the city clean, said Sadhan Kumar Ghosh, coordinator, Centre for Quality Management System, Javadpur University.
The Environmental Research & Ecological Regeneration project, with a budget of Rs 25 lakh, is the first of its kind in Kolkata. Anti-littering Campaign Committee, KMC, State Urban Development Authority, the state government, Paschim Banga Vigyan Mancha and even industrial associations like Indian Plastic Forum will participate in the programme. The pilot project involves door-to-door collection of dry wastes like plastics, metals and e-wastes in ward numbers 56, 57, 58 and 59 of Borough 7 of KMC. The plastics will be sorted out of the waste and in the green recycling process plant different products of plastics will be produced from the waste. On June 5, about 2,500 students from 26 schools of Borough 7 will participate in four different rallies which will start from all the four wards and meet at the site of inauguration."
