Textbook Crisis Hits CBSE Schools

Schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in the city have been hit by unavailibility of textbooks for the past one month since the beginning of the new academic session.

Children of classes IX-XII in all the schools are being forced to study from photocopied material circulated by the schools. Most students complain that they are not finding the experience appealing because the fun of studying from new textbooks at the beginning of a session is lost. School authorities blame the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for the crisis. Not only was there an inordinate delay in printing the textbooks, NCERT is also not sending freshly printed books to its sole agent in Kolkata.

"Fortunately, the NCERT has just uploaded the books on the Internet and we are now downloading them and circulating photocopies of their printouts among students. We cannot afford to waste time in these crucial years because it is during these years that students prepare for their board examinations. However, photocopied material do not have the appeal of textbooks and hence it is failing to attract students," said Mukta Nain, principal of Birla High School for Boys.

A large number of principals have complained to the CBSE about the crisis. "This is just an artificial crisis and booksellers are taking advantage of it. Some of them are sneaking in books from markets in Delhi and Mumbai, where the books are available and selling them at four times the price," Nain added.

With summer vacations starting next week, many students are visiting Delhi to buy textbooks or getting relatives and friends to send them. "Most students in my school come from well-to-do families and have computers at home, so we can download the complete textbook in advance. But what about students of Kendriya Vidyalayas who come from modest backgrounds?" asked Akash, a Class-X student of Lakshmipat Singhania Academy.

A letter signed by the principals of prominent schools like Apeejay and Mahadevi Birla Girls HS School, has already been sent to CBSE chairman, Ashoke Ganguly.
