City Goes Waterless, CESC Repair Work Disrupts Supply; Will be Normal on Monday, Assures Civic BodyBy Unregistered Visitors, Section Water
With mercury touching the 35-degree mark, various parts of Kolkata were left without water on Sunday.
Mrinal Kanti Mondol, member, mayor in council of KMC's water supply department, said supply was interrupted from 9 am as CESC carried out electrical repairs at Palta treatment plant and Tala water tank. The civic body had earlier issued warning on Friday about chances of water supply disruption. The worst hit today were families without alternative sources of water in areas of North and Central Kolkata, and Kasba. "We are a family of seven and often face water crisis on Sundays because the whole family stays home," Kasba resident Shivani Ghosh said. "The situation got worse today; by evening almost all stored water was exhausted." Municipal officials said pumping stations at Md. Ali Park, Auckland Square, Park Circus, Bagmari and Kasba failed to supply water to nearby areas today. B K Maity, deputy chief engineer of KMC's water supply department, said normal supply would resume by Monday morning. "The repair work will be over today," he said. Click on "Full Story" for more...
Sikha Samanta, who lives in Sambhu Babu Lane, close to CIT Road, said her family took hint from KMC's warning on Friday: "We stored water on Saturday and did not face any crisis today."
A resident of Gora Chand Road, at Park Circus, said his family did not face the crunch because they live in an apartment complex. "But people in slums nearby formed huge queues almost all day in front of the area's tubewell." The worst affected were residents of wards 30 and 31. "All basic services were withdrawn from the area by KMC engineers," ward 31 councillor Sunanda Guha said, "so the residents did not get any water the whole day." Rupa Bagchi, chairperson of borough 3, said though supply was affected in the area there was no major problem as such because "we had water tankers visiting the area once." Borough 5 chairman Mousumi Ghosh said the area's residents drew water from deep tubewells and hand pumps. "We did not need water tankers in the area." By- The Times Of India, 09-04-07
