Pollution chokes New Town, Rajarhat Among The Five Most Polluted Places In City, Says PCBBy Mrs Gupta, Section Civic Problems in Kolkata
Even before it has taken off as a dream township, Rajarhat has been hit by the pollution menace. New Town is now among the five most polluted areas in the city along with Shyambazar, Ultadanga, Moulali and Dunlop Bridge.
Rajarhat was included as a pollution measuring station in 2006. Data compiled by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) reveals that the township has almost double the permissible limit of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and respirable particulate matter (RPM). "The authorities did not take into account that greenery has to be maintained. Trees have been chopped without any effort to neutralise the damage. The rise in pollution was inevitable," said environment consultant Mohit Ray.
"This is a grim reminder that unplanned urbanisation is polluting places that had zero pollution," added Ray.
Experts like architect Samir Rakshit pointed out that the SPM count could have been checked had trees not been felled without compensatory plantation. "When you have construction on such a huge scale, pollution is bound to shoot up. The authorities should have planned to keep it under control. Hundreds of trees have been chopped in Rajarhat in a very short span. There is hardly anything left that can absorb the pollutants in the air," explained Rakshit. The WBPCB refused to comment on their finding. "It is an upcoming township which is why we included it in the monitoring list. We have not analysed the reasons behind the rising pollution there," said member-secretary Debal Ray. Source- Times Of India, Dated, April-06,2007
