Rabindra Bharati University wants to take over few CU collegesBy Dr arvind, Section Education
The Rabindra Bharati University (RBU) will once again pursue the idea of offering affiliation to a number of colleges currently running under the University of Calcutta (CU) in the North 24-Parganas.
The University has said that it is capable of taking up the load of more colleges even with the available infrastructure and existing work force. The idea was first mooted by the RBU a year ago at a meeting between the vice-chancellors of the state universities at Raj Bhavan. "It is when the CU proposed to `rationalise' the burden, we had made the offer," said Professor Bharati Mukherjee, Vice-Chancellor of the University. While the government has proposed to set up a full-fledged university in North 24-Parganas for reducing the load on CU, the idea to transfer some colleges to the RBU has so far not materialised. RBU representatives believe that by strengthening the existing infrastructure at RBU and bringing more colleges under its purview, the government can save a lot of expenditure. "This will be quite cost effective, compared to setting up of a new university," said an RBU representative. The University is ready to take up as many as 35 colleges in the North 24-Parganas. Bharati, however, has said that RBU will take up the matter in days to come, may be in the forthcoming convocation of the University. The University will organise its 32nd convocation at its Jorasanko campus on May 8. Renowned Sociologist Andre Beteille has been invited as the chief guest by the University. The University will also confer honorary D Lit degrees to four eminent personalities this year. Renowned linguist V I Subramanium, Sarod player Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, percussionist Pandit Kishen Maharaj and eminent artist Jogen Chowdhury will be given the degrees at the convocation.
