A real estate company, P S Group, has taken up the initiative to train drivers from the underprivileged section, a step towards making them financially independent.
"The driving sector needs to be explored as there is a lack of trained drivers. With opportunities given to the underprivileged section of the society from orphanages, slums and juvenile homes, it will be a source of income for them in the near future," said Pradip Chopra, the director of PS Group.
The government is ready to extend all help to organisations making forays in this direction, said Subhas Chakraborty, state Transport Minister. "West Bengal accounted for 8 per cent deaths due to road accidents in 2005," he added.
Chakraborty said that two training institutes will come up in the city at Rajarhat and Diamond Harbour with the one already present at Jessore Road. "Professional training" is essential to prevent road mishaps. Proper training institutes pertaining to driving are very important, the minister added.
The minister said that the coming up of a truck terminal by end of 2007 will prevent entrance of trucks to the city, and there will be a huge demand for van drivers.
The project called "Sunshine", which has been undertaken by PS group, is a joint venture between two NGOs Nayeedisha (the NGO of PS Group) and Asha Sanchar. They will impart practical and theoretical driving lessons to the poor. The project has already received more than 70 applications.
The purpose of the project, apart from road safety, is to rehabilitate atleast 1,200 deprived people, including women.
The training will start from May 2 at Salt Lake. Chopra told Newsline that the poor, who get trained under the project, will get employment after the sessions, and this will be a continous process.
