Officials Take Out Cars, Spare Parts From HM Plant

The officials of Hindustan Motors (HM) armed with High Court orders and special officers appointed by the Court on Thursday took out fully-built Ambassador cars, along with dies and components belonging to Tata Motors, from the barricaded HM plant at Uttarpara.

"Apart from spares, we also took out more than 200 Ambassador cars fit for the road. There are another 30-35 completed cars inside the factory that we will probably take out tomorrow," said Moloy Chowdhury, HM executive vice-president.

Union unrest had forced HM to declare suspension of work at the plant on April 11. A force of 1,000 policemen has been deployed since then.

Almost a week after the Calcutta High Court appointed officers to oversee evacuation of dies and tooling equipment, six trailers and two containers escorted by Tata Motors officials entered the plant on Thursday. The material was taken away, while around 60 members of the striking Sangrami Sramik Karmachari Union staged a feeble protest.

According to Ajoy Thakur, Srirampur sub-divisional police officer, the exercise passed off peacefully. But SSKU president Amitava Bhattacharya said about nine union members were injured during a lathicharge.

Union general secretary Abhash Munshi maintained the agitation would continue.

Tata Motors moved to court on April 14 to seek repossession of equipment manufactured by HM as the agitation by a section of SSKU was preventing any movement of goods in and out of Uttarpara plant. According to company officials, this also hampered production at HM's Jamshedpur plant.

Following the petition, three special officers deputed by the Calcutta High Court inspected the closed HM factory last Saturday, took stock of the inventory and sent a report to the court.
