The Union Government will appoint a consultant who will conduct a survey of the tourism sector of the state and send its report to the Centre so that plans and proposals can be initiated by the state government to strengthen this sector.

An announcement to this effect was made by G D Gautama, Principal Secretary of the state tourism department, at a meeting at the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

"The consultant is going to study different places that have tourism value in the state and suggest infrastructural changes keeping in mind the ecological and heritage aspects. This kind of a consultant will help publicise our state which has great tourism potential," said Gautama.

A full-fledged professional agency will also be employed by the state to advertise it as a tourist spot both before the national and the international media.

Talks are on with three such agencies for this job. However, Ernst and Young might be finally getting the job, Gautama said.

He admitted that the biggest drawback in the state's tourism sector is the lack of publicity.

"We have so many great places but none of them have been properly publicised. The Centre has shortlisted three such places that could be promoted as tourism sites and they have also given us money to strengthen infrastructure at these places. They are tea gardens, Dooars and Digha beach sites. The grants are Rs 8 crore, Rs 6 crore and Rs 6 crore respectively," he said.

For instance, Sundarbans has heritage value and promoting it as a proper tourism site has international ramifications because a part of the marshy wetlands lies in Bangladesh. Other points discussed in the meeting are related to the setting up of colleges and training institutes to train tourist guides, increasing accessibility to a certain place, charging discriminatory entry fees from national and international tourists when it comes to entering monuments and heritage buildings and adjusting the timings in accordance to the requirements of tourists.
