UGC Grants Rs 27 Cr For Women's Hostels

Good news for women who have to travel long distances to and from college. Women's hostels are coming up in at least 32 colleges of the state with funds sanctioned for the purpose by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Of these, at least 11 are in the city while the remaining are just beyond the city limits. Among the city colleges, St Xavier's College, Lady Brabourne College and Scottish Church College have received the largest grants.

A total of Rs 27.75 crore has been sanctioned by UGC for construction of the hostels. Incidentally, even the best colleges of the state have often been criticised by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council for not providing hostel facilities to women.

A letter about the sanction reached Calcutta University, to which all these colleges are affiliated, and copies were sent to individual colleges. UGC has also disbursed at least half the sum sanctioned for each college and construction work in most colleges are about to begin. UGC granted the money from the 10th Plan funds under the hostel facilities for women scheme. Colleges will have to spend the sum by March 2009.

St Xavier's College and Brahmananda Keshab Chandra College have received the highest grant of Rs 2 crore each to build the ladies' hostels while Scottish Church College has received Rs 1.99 crore followed by Lady Brabourne College, which got Rs 1.91 crore. Among other colleges in the city that have bagged sizeable grants under the UGC scheme are Deshbandhu College for Girls (Rs 1.60 crore), Netajinagar College for Women (Rs 1.25 crore) and New Alipore College (Rs 1.34 crore).

The colleges are thrilled and say the grant will help remove a long standing lacunae which existed mainly because of paucity of funds. "We had applied to the the UGC with models of the proposed hostel along with the number of women it would accommodate about two months ago through Calcutta University. We are happy that the funds have started coming promptly," said PC Mathew, principal of St Xavier's College.

The 150 year old college does not have any hostel for women. According to plans, the new hostel for 150 inmates would come up on the new campus that the college has acquired on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass near Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute. "We are ready with the plan and the construction would start in a couple of months," Mathew added.

Scottish Church College has two ladies' hostels on its college premises on Bidhan Sarani that houses 60 students. "We will demolish one of the existing hostels and build a swank hostel to accommodate 150 women. It will have airconditioned rooms with attached kitchens and toilets," said principal J Abraham.

Lady Brabourne College already has a hostel inside the Park Circus campus that houses about 150 women. A similar facility will be built after demolishing an abandoned building that exists on the campus.
