Part II Exams Begin In State

The BA, BSc and B.Com Part II examinations (under the old 1 + 2 system ) of University of Calcutta started today with college students all over the state appearing for their Honours Paper I. Though the first day of the examination passed off peacefully, there were instances of some students falling ill due to the scorching heat. Sritapa Bera, a student of English Honours from Loreto College, who sat for her exam at the Lady Brabourne College centre, had to be administered drinks to help her cope with the heat. "She was quite well this morning. But she suddenly fell ill after arriving at the examination centre. It must be the heat, coupled with the tension of sitting for such a serious examination. But I spoke to her just before she entered the examination hall and she said that she was all right," said Tapashi Bera, Sritapa's mother.

Considering that the examination hours are from 12 pm to 4 pm in the evening, the students have to face the worst afternoon heat. "Some classrooms do not have adequate number of fans. So it is gruelling to sit for four hours and write the papers in this heat," said Sayori Mitra from Shri Shikshayatan College. With the heat becoming unbearable, the students can only thank their stars that their papers were not tough. "The questions were quite expected. We also heard our friends from other department saying that apart from a few tricky questions, the paper was otherwise quite predictable," said Nafisa Begum, a student of Rani Birla College. "We have arranged for adequate water so that students do not go thirsty. Even the seating arrangement is made keeping in mind the weather," said Dr Mamata Ray, Principal of Presidency College.

This is the last year for the Part II examinations being held under the old syllabus. From next year, the new syllabus will come into effect. Under it, students in first year will appear for Part I examinations, second year students will appear for Part II examinations and third year students will sit for Part III.
